Dear Mr. Maurer:

	Enclosed is a copy of a much belated writeup of my 1971
Turing Award lecture.  I was stimulated to write it finally by
a request from ACM for something to include in a collected
volume of these lectures.  However, it occurs to me that you
might also be willing to publish it in the {\it Communications},
although at the time Turing lectures were being published in the
 {\it Journal}.
As you will see, it purports to be up-to-date.  I won't mind if
you submit it for refereeing.
